The second animated feature film from the Hanna-Barbera studio (the first was 1964’s Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear) created an alter-ego for Fred Flintstone in the guise of secret agent Rock Slag, to capitalise on the recent success of James Bond’s Thunderball.
Rock Slag is injured during a chase in Bedrock and Slag’s chief decides to replace the injured agent with Fred Flintstone, who just happens to look like him.
The trip takes Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty to Paris and Rome, while Fred tries to foil the mysterious Green Goose’s evil plan for a destructive missile.
The film was produced very quickly and did not have the pacing of the television series, but it was still a treat to see the Flintstone family and their friends on the big screen.
The movie was created just as the series was ending its sixth and final prime time run on ABC. Of course, many further adventures of The Flintstones would run on Saturday mornings, for several decades.
