More adventures of some of the characters from the television series, although McHale himself is absent (Ernest Borgnine was off filming Flight of the Phoenix).
PT73 is commanded here by Ensign Parker (Tim Conway), who has the job of conveying their silly, bombastic CO, Captain Binghampton (Joe Flynn), to Brisbane, Australia, where the crew get mixed up with the crew of a Russian merchant ship.
After a mix-up over uniforms, Parker is mistaken for Wilbur Harkness (Ted Bessell), the air force officer son of General Harkness and must maintain the charade.
He is subsequently promoted for (accidentally) alerting the base to a sneak Japanese air raid and then again for finding out the whereabouts of the Japanese Navy (accidentally again) while suspended in a jeep under an aeroplane.
Parker finally becomes a national hero – despite the protests of the real Lieutenant Harkness, recently released after being mistakenly arrested as a spy – and heads to Washington to be decorated by President Roosevelt.
