Uncertain in his marriage, a New York sportswriter (Woody Allen) decides to trace the birth mother of his exceptionally bright, adopted young son – adopted because his gallery-owner wife (Helena Bonham Carter) can’t afford to take a year out of her life to have one of her own.
When he finds out that she is a prostitute and a porn actress (Mira Sorvino), he sets about bettering her circumstances but finds his good intentions don’t produce the results he intended.
Their developing relationship forms the rest of the story, as he tries to get her into a respectable marriage.
Woody Allen audaciously lays on an actual Greek chorus for this tale of Manhattan neuroses, thus enlarging the tragic nature of what remains a good-natured comedy.
Not up there with his previous efforts, Bullets Over Broadway or Manhattan Murder Mystery, but loaded with bawdy humour.
