    Night on Earth (1991)

Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Reddit Email

Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch takes us halfway around the globe in five taxicabs as day slips into night and dawn pushes away the darkness. The individual tales have little in common, apart from the use of cabs.

The Rome adventure builds in outrageousness as a madcap taxi driver (Roberto Benigni) picks up a priest with a heart condition (Paolo Bonacelli) and babbles the cleric to death.

The Helsinki chapter that follows introduces notes of deepening tragedy as a driver (Matti Pellonpää) hauls three drunks (Kari Väänänen, Sakari Kuosmanen and Tomi Salmela) through the city in the early morning.

The Los Angeles segment that opens the film juxtaposes two stars – Winona Ryder (as a tough, grease-smeared cabbie who dreams of being a mechanic not a movie star) and Gena Rowlands (as a casting agent) – in an ironic tale of a rebel with a cause and a Hollywood type.

The New York sequence, full of good fellowship and energy, offers faces familiar to moviegoers, belonging to Giancarlo Esposito (as a hip dude), Rosie Perez (as a sqawky sexpot) and Armin Mueller-Stahl (as the former circus clown from East Germany who transports the others into the depths of Brooklyn).

The ride through Paris, dark and romantic, brings new faces – Isaach De Bankolé as an emigre driver from the Ivory Coast who engages in a curious colloquy with a sightless self-sufficient passenger (Béatrice Dalle) – as does the Helsinki episode, where a quartet of Finns shift Night on Earth from boozy comedy to the sobering, sombre light of day.

Using a row of clocks and maps, Jarmusch flies us from West to East between dusk and dawn as whimsy at twilight gives way to tragedy in the dark night of the soul. The movie feels real because Jarmusch insisted on filming real taxicabs, towed through the night.

Perhaps the most memorable element of this always changing, funny, penetrating, zany and sad film is its score, a moody, sometimes funky, sometimes cool progression of tunes and themes by strangle-throated Tom Waits.

Happy 81st to Anita Harris 🫶

Happy 81st to Anita Harris 🫶Happy 81st Birthday to Anita Harris, born 3rd June 1942 in Somerset, England. She is an all round entertainer, singer/dancer/actress.
As a child she was a keen ice skater, and just before her 16th birthday she was talent spotted and invited to join a dance troupe and headed for Las Vegas, performing 3 shows a night. She stayed 6 months.

While she enjoyed dancing, singing was always her first love. Upon returning to England she joined the Cliff Adams Singers and was with them for 3 years. In 1961 she made her first recordings with the John Barry Seven. Possibly two of her best known recordings are 'Just Loving You' and 'We're Going on a Tuppenny Bus Ride'.

In the 1960's She appeared in a two 'Carry On' films. On TV in the 70's among other things she was on David Nixon's Magic Box for 8 years as his assistant. She continued working on stage and screen with entertainment legends – everyone from Bob Monkhouse and Tommy Cooper to Bruce Forsyth, Morecambe and Wise and Harry Secombe. In 1986 she made her debut in 'legitimate theatre' playing Grizabella in the West End production of Cats.
Today she continues to perform on stage and in cabaret with her band. You can hear her recordings on
serenade-radio.com the Best in Easy Listening.

I recently fulfilled the dream of over 40 years and saw The Zombies perform live (They were amazing!). Their current bass player is a chap called Søren Koch, and this is his regular band - The Beatophonics. If you love 60s Beat music, do yourself a favour and have a listen. They are truly superb. open.spotify.com/artist/5W05FY5rERtVTBippPjold?si=nU5zM8gJSXONAGCWOUrTnA
