Lieutenant Commander Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) is a navy officer who gets posted at the Pentagon where he reports directly to the Secretary of Defense David Brice (Gene Hackman).
Farrell starts an affair with Susan Atwell (Sean Young) not knowing that she is Brice’s mistress.
When Brice finds that Susan is seeing another man, he accidentally kills her. In order to cover up Brice’s involvement, his aide Scott Pritchard (Will Patton) engineers a story that the “other man” in Susan’s life was the one that killed her and that he is a legendary Russian spy codenamed “Yuri”.
Tom is assigned to the case of finding the killer – and the fictional KGB mole – but a Polaroid negative of him was found at Susan’s place so he has mere hours to prove that Brice was the killer before Sam Hesselman (George Dzundza) regenerates the photo and reveals Tom’s face.
No Way Out is an exciting psychological thriller that set Kevin Costner on his way to becoming the biggest star in Hollywood. The memorable surprise ending ties up the labyrinthine plot nicely.
Brad Pitt appears in an uncredited bit part as a party guest.
