An invader from the distant planet Davanna is sent to Earth to obtain blood for himself and the rest of the inhabitants of his planet, who are apparently dying of “blood evaporation”.
The old boy (Paul Birch) goes by the name of “Paul Johnson” – a rather gentlemanly sort who resembles a middle-aged insurance salesman – and gets around in dark glasses to hide the fact that his eyes have no irises or pupils (and can kill the “subhumans” of Earth with just one look).
Mr Johnson hires pretty blonde nurse Nadine (Beverly Garland) to attend to him.
Nadine and her boyfriend, officer Harry Sherbourne (Morgan Jones), eventually save the day. Until next time . . .
Paul Birch walked off the film before shooting was completed after having a physical confrontation with Roger Corman. His remaining scenes were shot with Lyle Latell doubling for Birch.
Allied Artists released the film on a double bill with another Corman film, Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), with the tagline “Terrorama! Double Horror Sensation!”
A 1988 straight-to-video remake starred porn queen Traci Lords as Nadine (her first “mainstream” film after starring in more than 60 hardcore porn movies while she was underage) and Arthur Roberts as Mr Johnson. The film was remade again in 1995 with Michael York as the alien and Parker Stevenson as Jack Sherbourne.
