Eddie Pedak (French actor Alain Delon in his first Hollywood film) has served 18 months in San Quentin for armed robbery and is now trying to go straight.
Unfortunately, he is prevented from this endeavour by the persecution of embittered local cop Inspector Mike Vido (Van Heflin) and his gangster brother, Walter (Jack Palance) who keep harassing him for one last major heist.
Eddie has been saving money from his job at a meat processing plant on the docks. He wants to buy himself a fishing boat and be independent for the first time in his life, to provide for his beautiful wife Kristine (Ann-Margaret) and six-year-old daughter, Kathy (Tammy Locke).
