Three American girls – Fran, a singer-dancer; Maggie, who is a secretary, and Susie, a dumb brunette – go on holiday to Madrid, each hoping to attract a suitable husband. The trio share a flat and their confidences.
Fran (Ann-Margret) is almost run over by a handsome, young doctor, Andres Briones (Andre Lawrence), and they fall for each other, but he sends her away because he cannot afford to support a wife.
Maggie (Carol Lynley) is in love with her boss, Paul Barton (Brian Keith), chief of an American news agency – and he with her – but when they declare their love to each other, Paul’s wife, Jane (Gene Tierney) takes a hand and breaks it up.
Susie (Pamela Tiffin) has a romantic time with Emilio (Anthony Franciosa), an aristocratic, heart-breaking louse who drops her when he fails to get into her bedroom.
The three disillusioned girls all decide to return to America, but Paul Barton – now reconciled to his wife – gives a party and announces that he is leaving the agency and handing over to his assistant, Peter (who has a soft spot for Maggie), so Maggie’s future is settled.
Then Andres and Emilio turn up at the party, and they are reunited with Fran and Susie, respectively. And all is smiles and music once again.
A rare example of a successful movie remade by the same director as the original, this is Jean Negulesco’s reworking of his own Three Coins in the Fountain(1954), this time set in Spain.
The novelty has worn a little thin, and Fox’s standard “three girls out on the town” plot looks stale, but this frothy, fun film is still worth a look.
