The bungling cops attempt to bring LA’s heinous Wilson Heights Gang to justice. But every time they’re ready to pounce, the criminals – a somersaulting, knife-throwing troupe of freaks who, despite being infernally stupid, are so lovable that you rather perversely find yourself wanting them to get away with it.
As usual, the Police Academy oddballs are prevented from doing their duty by the meddlings of the eternally brown-nosing and pitifully incompetent Captain Harris (G W Bailey).
Having run out of inventive gags and originality by the final scene of the very first Police Academy (1984), the series had overstayed its welcome long before this fifth sequel by stretching a thin premise to breaking point.
There’s nothing as outrageously brazen as the ‘catapulting-Lt Harris-up-a-horses-bum’ routine from the original and aside from the vocal gymnastics of Michael Winslow, this laughter-free zone couldn’t even get itself arrested for indecency.
