Wealthy Investment Counselor Jessica Warren (Merle Oberon) is involved in a hit-and-run car accident and eventually stops to call the police and turn herself in. But as she makes the call from a phone booth, Dave Barrett (Lex Barker) steals her car.
Barrett is co-owner of a dog track who is trying to avoid the henchmen of gangster Frankie Adair (Warren Stevens), who plans to take control of the track.
Jessica reports the theft and sets the time of the accident ahead so that Dave is implicated. Meanwhile, Adair kills Barrett’s ex-partner, Lou Belden (Tim Sullivan) and tries to pin the crime on Dave.
And now Dave Barrett is in a pickle because one misdeed – the car theft – is his alibi for the other (the murder of his partner).
Detective Pete Carroll (Charles Drake) comes to Barrett’s aid and seemingly gets him out from under the murder charge.
Jessica sticks close to Dave in order to keep in touch with developments and the surprising climax shows how she makes up for her past mistakes.
