While playing in a derelict building, four children accidentally kill a young girl called Robin Hammond (Tammy Bourne) and swear to cover it up. An innocent man is subsequently convicted of the death.
But six years later, as the quartet prepares for their prom night, each receives a menacing phone call from someone who knows their secret.
Jamie Lee Curtis cemented her Scream Queen title with this inventively plotted – (relatively) light on gore – entry in the teenagers-in-jeopardy/stalk-and-slash cycle inaugurated by Halloween(1978) and appropriating the Carrie(1976) high-school setting.
An elongated and suspenseful chase sequence through the campus and the surprise identity of the masked maniac lifts it above average.
