A West German zoo commissions Harry Stanton (Robert Mitchum) and Otto Abbot (Jack Hawkins) to travel to Malaya to capture a rare animal – a combination of lion and leopard known as The Enchantress.
Abbot is a big game hunter and one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Malayan jungle. He is accompanied by Anna (Elsa Martinelli), who has been with him since he adopted her as a fourteen-year-old waif and has since become his mistress.
The first meeting of the two men reveals their differences in temperament. Stanton is a trapper, but Abbot is a killer, and Abbot’s trophies of the hunt are repulsive to Stanton.
Their differences are heightened by Stanton’s open admiration of Anna, and he tells her he regards her as another of Abbot’s trophies. She tries to explain that, contrary to Stanton’s belief, she was not seduced by Abbot; she gave herself to him because he was kind to her, and she had nothing to give in return but herself.
Arriving in the jungle, the party first trap two tigers. Abbot leads the expedition into trouble when he kills a deer sacred to the local tribe, but Stanton diplomatically straightens the situation out and, in doing so, wins the admiration of Anna.
The two grow closer, especially after Stanton saves Anna from a deadly snake, and Abbot becomes increasingly intractable.
Reaching the Enchantress country, the trackers trace the animal to a cave on a mountainside. Abbot, in an attempt to vindicate himself in the eyes of Anna and the cynical Stanton, goes alone into the cave and is attacked by the ferocious beast. Stanton saves him at considerable risk to his own life and finally nets the animal.
Although their mission is completed, other adventures await them. These new dangers arise from the jealous relationships that enmesh them, indirectly leading to The Enchantress escaping from captivity and throwing a whole town into panic.
Rampage was made by a comparatively new company at the time called Seven Arts.
