Hot on the heels of box office successes with Attack Of The Crab Monsters and Not Of This Earth, young producer/director Roger Corman presented his 23rd feature film, The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent (shortened to simply Viking Women for its US release).
The film was released by American International (AIP), whose budget and estimate of the moviegoers’ intelligence were the lowest yet.
Lovely Desir (Abby Dalton) and Enger (Susan Cabot) are the leaders of a group of beautiful Viking women whose male warriors have inexplicably never returned to their home in Stannjold from an expedition.
And so the tough Viking cuties load up their longboat and set out in search of their missing mates.
After many a grim ordeal, they encounter a primitive band of warriors – the Grimaults, led by the tyrannical Stark (Richard Devon) – who have captured and enslaved their men.
They manage to free their menfolk and escape to sea, pursued by the Grimaults.
Fortunately, their pursuers are killed by a huge sea serpent. Fortunately, Viking Vedric (Brad Jackson) manages to hurl his sword at a vital spot on the monster and kill it.
The acting and direction are crude, and much of the anachronistic dialogue creates unintentional laughs, but there is no lack of violent and spectacular action, lightly flavoured with sex.
