When night worker William Haskin (Jack Watson) sees a newspaper story and picture of the forthcoming marriage of ice skating star Samantha Gray (former child actor Lynne Frederick in her biggest movie role) to wealthy businessman Alan Falconer (John Leyton), he packs his bags and heads south for London.
On the way to her wedding reception, Samantha notices Haskin’s face in the crowd. He manages to slip a bloodied knife onto the ornate wedding cake trolley, which Samantha sees, and she has to be carried off in hysterics.
Sometime later, while alone in the house, she is terrorised by a shadow clutching a knife, with no apparent explanation.
Shadowing the young skater, Haskin leaves a trail of murdered people in his wake – all of them associated with her in some way – until a despairing Samantha visits her psychiatrist friend, Leonard (John Fraser). She then reveals that when she was seven years old, she had witnessed her mother’s murder by her lover – William Haskin.
Having now completed his prison term, it seems he is out to take revenge on Samantha.
The sympathetic psychiatrist promises to try to help trace Haskin, but later, while stopped at traffic lights on the way home, he fails to notice the fatal hand reaching out for him from the rear of the car . . .
Samantha ultimately enlists the help of her girlfriend Beth (Stephanie Beacham) to track down Haskin.
It is a trail which leads to further frightening developments, murder, and a shocking climax when the horrific implications of schizophrenia are finally revealed.
