In a (virtually) dialogue-free movie, Mel Brooks plays film director Mel Funn, who plans to make a modern-day silent movie in an attempt to save ailing film corporation Big Picture Studios.
Aided by his henchmen Marty Eggs (Marty Feldman) and (Dom Bell) Dom DeLuise, Mel sets out to shoot his masterpiece and on the way runs into a number of well-known movie faces (Liza Minnelli, Burt Reynolds, James Caan) in cameo roles.
There’s some well-honed slapstick and a number of fair gags, but the film is always more of a Brooks comedy than a homage to the silent era.
