Set in the early 19th Century, Scottish army deserter Davey Haggart (John Hurt) is determined to become a bigger thief and scoundrel than his father, who was also a notorious highwayman until he was hanged at the age of 20.
Teaming up with pickpocket MacNab (Ronald Fraser) as his accomplice, Davey’s exploits include a spot of body-snatching, breaking a man out of Stirling jail, holding up the stagecoach, and robbing the eccentric Duke of Argyll (Robert Morley) who wants to be Davey’s benefactor.
Unfortunately, he is handicapped by the fact that his childhood playmate Annie (Pamela Franklin) is equally determined to track him down, save his soul and marry him.
Nigel Davenport is the Sergeant who pursues Davey through all his endeavours.
Despite being set in Scotland, filming took place in Ireland.
