Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)

Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Reddit Email

Although nominally a sequel to 1983’s Sleepaway Camp, this film had a different director, a different actress playing the lead character (Bruce Springsteen‘s sister, Pamela, replaced Felissa Rose) and a different camp.

Five years after the massacre at Camp Arawak in the original film, Peter Baker – aka Angela Baker aka “The Angel Of Death” – has undergone years of therapy, electro-shock and sexual reassignment surgeries, changed her name from Baker to Johnson, and finally landed herself a job as a camp counsellor at Camp Rolling Hills – a new camp that has set up shop a few miles away from the old Camp Arawak.

Running this camp is the kindly Uncle John (Walter Gotell) and his head of counsellors, TC (Brian Patrick Clarke).

Angela (Springsteen) has high standards and is ultra straight-edged and willing to “send kids home” for the slightest infraction.

After arguing with a camper called Phoebe (Heather Binion), Angela hits her over the head with a log before cutting out her tongue.

The next day, when other campers ask about Phoebe, Angela tells them she had to send her home.

Later that day, Angela discovers Brooke (Carol Chambers) and Jodi (Amy Fields) smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol. Afterwards, Brooke wakes up on a grill and discovers Jodi’s charred remains. Angela then pours gasoline over Brooke and burns her to death.

That night, the boys start a panty raid where Mare (Susan Marie Snyder) flashes her breasts. Angela decides to drive her home and murders her with an electric drill.

The next night, campers Anthony (Benji Wilhoite) and Judd (Walter Franks III) try to scare Angela, dressed as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.

The plan backfires when Angela, dressed as Leatherface, slashes Anthony’s throat and murders Judd with a chainsaw.

The next day, Angela sets a trap for Ally (Valerie Hartman) and forces her down an outhouse, drowning her in faeces, urine, and leeches.

Demi (Kendall Bean) later reveals to Angela that she phoned the families of the girls “sent home” and discovered the girls didn’t make it home. Realising she could be caught, Angela strangles Demi with a guitar string, before stabbing Lea (Julie Murphy) to death when she finds Demi’s body.

The next day, head counsellors Uncle John and TC fire Angela for sending too many campers home. Molly (Renée Estevez, daughter of Martin Sheen and sister of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez) and Sean (Tony Higgins) go into the woods to cheer her up but the pair discover the bodies of the other campers before Angela ties them up.

TC goes after Molly and Sean but Angela throws battery acid in his face, killing him. Sean is decapitated after he realises Angela is the murderer from the Camp Arawak incident several years ago.

Molly eventually manages to knock Angela out and escape. After an extended chase through the woods, Molly falls onto a rock and is presumed dead.

After killing the remaining campers, Angela hitchhikes and is picked up by a driver (Jill Jane Clements) who quickly annoys her so she kills her.

Meanwhile, Molly has regained consciousness and makes it out of the woods onto a road. When a truck pulls up behind her, Molly is horrified to learn that Angela is the driver . . .

Released in some markets as Nightmare Vacation II.

Yes, one of the great presenters. R.I.P.

For fans of the radio series Round The Horne (1965 - 1968) - starring the inimitable Kenneth Williams - there are several full episodes on Spotify. Some of the humour is still pretty close to the edge, even by modern standards. Bona!
