Attractive young Sally Martin (Yvonne Owen) inherits the family mansion and lives in it with her younger brother, Ronnie (Michael Medwin), an aspiring young newspaper reporter. Both of them are extremely hard up.
Ronnie decides to fake a murder (with Sally as the victim) in order to be able to write a successful and remunerative story for the newspapers.
Sally’s fiance Bill (Hugh Latimer) aids them in their scheme, making use of a hidden passage in the mansion – reached by means of a secret panel – where Sally will remain hidden.
Their plans are upset, however, when they find themselves involved in a real murder and are cornered by a gang of jewel thieves.
They find themselves in a tight corner but are eventually able to escape and disclose the identity of the real murderer.
This comedy/thriller from Hammer Films, filmed at Oakley Court in Berkshire – also the location for Half a Sixpence (1967) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – had previously been produced for the screen by Herbert Brenon in 1936.
