Three young crooks (Derren Nesbitt, Keith Faulkner and Morgan Sheppard) scheme to rob a bank in a medium-sized city (the location used for filming was St. Margaret’s, Twickenham) on a Friday evening at the start of a holiday weekend, reasoning that the timing will enable them to flee the country before authorities are alerted.
A last-minute change of plan by the bank manager, Mr Spencer (Colin Gordon) – who has decided to stay late at the bank and attend to correspondence with his secretary, Rose (Ann Lynn) – forces the villains to tie the pair up in the strong room (vault) before making their getaway with £30,000.
One of the young men is killed in a car accident, which eventually alerts the police (keys to the strong room were found amongst his effects).
In an 11th-hour realisation of the dire straits in which they left Spencer and Rose – and to save themselves from a murder charge (murder was still punishable by hanging in Britain at the time) – the other two bank robbers (Nesbitt and Faulkner) race to the bank to try and rescue their suffocating captives.
The police arrive at the same time to find Mr Spencer alive, but Rose has died. The murder charge will stick.
Directed by B-movie maestro Vernon Sewell, Strongroom is a simple and straightforward low-budget thriller that packs intense tension into its brief running time.
