This romantic crime melodrama concerns an elderly spinster who perpetrates the ” perfect ” safe robbery for not entirely selfish reasons, slips up, but is saved by providence from the consequences.
Miss Brill (Jean Cadell), a prim but lonely head-cashier who is due for retirement, decides to rob her firm’s bulging safe to make her old age comfortable and support an American friend’s orphanage.
Following a few drinks at a shady Soho nightclub, Miss Brill interests Morrissey (Dick Emery), a master crook, and his associate Joe (Donald Eccles) in her proposition.
Miss Brill then staggers out of the club but is conducted safely home by Ruth (Christina Gregg) and Dave (Pete Murray) – a young couple whose marriage is opposed by Ruth’s Police Inspector father because Dave’s future lacks security.
After the theft, Superintendent White (Ralph Michael) is put on the case and Morrissey and Joe are soon arrested, but Miss Brill has a fatal heart attack on a liner bound for America before she can be apprehended.
Finally, Dave joins the police force and White accepts him as a son-in-law.
