Marcy Lewis of Indiana (Jane Wyman) is bright, friendly and immediately likeable. She loves to meet people, and she thinks air travel is the greatest invention since the wheel.
She and American Airlines are clearly made for each other and it is inevitable that they will get together to their mutual advantage.
This union will require some readjustment on both sides.
It is the readjustment which provides the brighter moments of Three Guys Named Mike. Infractions of the rules seem inescapable when a spirited girl like Marcy is training to become an airline stewardess – and when it comes to AA rule infraction, she is a champion in her class.
She perfumes her first captain’s radio microphone, she brings a dog out of the baggage compartment so a young passenger will go to sleep (it is only the cruellest fate which puts a cat lover onboard to report her), and she gets innocently involved in one of those brawls which the tabloids love, and which embarrass the airline.
Marcy also gets herself into the middle of a romantic quadrangle with a pilot (Howard Keel), an advertising executive (Barry Sullivan) and a quiet young research scientist working his way through a graduate course (Van Johnson) – who all happen to be called Mike.
The three Mikes get on each other’s nerves, which results in a wild scrimmage in a photographer’s studio with near-disastrous results for all their careers.
But nothing in Marcy’s private life matches the moment when, happily aloft on her first flight, she discovers she has failed to check an important detail, and there are no lunches aboard for her passengers.
This film – suggested to MGM by real-life air hostess Ethel Wells (who also has a brief cameo) – was a success at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $577,000.
