Three London bachelors – Harris (Jimmy Edwards), J (David Tomlinson), and George (Laurence Harvey) – decide to take a holiday boating up the Thames to Oxford.
George is glad to get away from his job at the bank. Harris is happy to get away from Mrs Willis (Martita Hunt), who is pressing him to announce his engagement to her daughter, Clara (Adrienne Corri). J is anxious to take a holiday from his wife, Ethelbertha (Noelle Middleton).
Battling against Hampton Court maze, tents, locks, a cricket match, the rain and the Henley Regatta the accident-prone threesome have one success – they meet three attractive girls – Sophie (Shirley Eaton), Primrose (Lisa Gastoni) and Bluebell (Jill Ireland).
As things become interesting, J’s wife, Mrs Willis and Clara arrive on the scene to set things straight again while George and Bluebell think about a future together.
The film is essentially a series of set pieces, and it’s very heavy on the slapstick (which hasn’t aged well).
Apparently, the 1889 book on which it was based (by someone called Jerome K Jerome) was quite good.
