One Friday in summer, three gunmen – Chapman (J. Carrol Naish), Dill (Lee Marvin) and Harper (Stephen McNally) – arrive in the small copper mining town of Bradenville with a well-devised plan for robbing the local bank.
In the town itself, many of its prominent citizens are experiencing crises of one kind or another in their lives, and as the bank robbery nears, a web of human interest weaves around Peeping Tom bank manager Harry Reeves (Tommy Noonan); pretty nurse Linda Sherman (Virginia Leith); light-fingered librarian Elsie Braden (Sylvia Sidney); Shelley Martin (Victor Mature), a businessman suspected of cowardice; alcoholic mine heir Boyd Fairchild (Richard Egan) and his unfaithful wife Emily (Margaret Hayes).
Their destinies collide in the violence during and following the raid.
In a final, savage and yet majestic scene Borgnine and Marvin represent the extreme moralities and immoralities of violence.
