Wake Me When the War Is Over (1969)

During the latter days of World War II, bumbling US Army Air Force Lieutenant Roger Carrington (Ken Berry) is rescued from German hands by Baroness Marlene (Eva Gabor), a lonely anti-Nazi widow.

The Baroness is very taken with the lieutenant and doesn’t tell him when the war ends, hiding him in her chateau for nearly five years and convincing him that the war is continuing, assisted by Major Erich Mueller (Werner Klemperer channelling his Colonel Klink character from Hogan’s Heroes) who is besotted with the baroness.

He eventually leaves Marlene’s estate but does not realise he’s now in a peacetime country.

Unfortunately, nobody can tell him the war is over because no one around him speaks English, including the Baroness’ maid Eva (Danielle De Metz), who accompanies him – and who he eventually marries.

This made-for-TV movie first aired in the US as the ABC Movie of the Week on 14 October 1969.
