Joel Tarrant (Ty Hardin) is a young horse trainer and a good one at that. He thoroughly understands his job, and he’s as straight as a die; no crooked racing for Joel. All the same, racing has led to a tiff between himself and his girlfriend Anne (Dorothy Provine).
Joel receives an offer from wealthy property tycoon Matt Rubio (Ralph Meeker) to take over training at his stable. Joel accepts but is disappointed to find that everything is first-class in the Rubio Stables except the horses, which are of poor quality.
Joel meets Rubio’s wife, Laura (Suzanne Pleshette), a beautiful, cultured woman – in sharp contrast to her husband, who is not distinguished for his good manners.
Joel and Laura are instantly attracted to each other, and an illicit love affair develops, which Rubio presently discovers.
Rubio sends his chauffeur to fire Joel and throw him off the property, and also refuses to sanction the purchase of a horse which Joel has made on his behalf. Joel now has to raise $6,600 to pay for the horse.
Laura finds herself torn between her affection for Joel and the luxury that her husband’s wealth can provide. While she wrestles with the problem, the two men fight out their private battle against the backdrop of the “wall of noise” – the roar of the crowd which greets the horses as they approach the finishing post.
