What do you do when you shoot too much footage for one movie? The answer that MGM came up with was to make up a very low-budget film from the leftovers of King Solomon’s Mines (1950) – itself not exactly high-grade.
Watusi was a vague spin-off from the original novel, using the name ‘Quartermain’ and very little else as Alan Quartermain’s son, Harry (George Montgomery) travels to Africa to find the treasure his father was unable to bring home.
Several pieces of film were borrowed wholesale from the earlier movie, including the stampede sequence, and nothing whatsoever was added.
This is even more surprising when one considers that the script was written by James Clavell, who wrote the entertaining Shogun.
