This classy soap opera set in the McCarthy era was fortunate to have inspired casting with Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand – both at the peak of their box-office appeal – as mismatched lovers whose ideological differences pull them apart.
Katie Morosky (Streisand) is a loud Jewish left-wing campus radical during the 1930s. Hubbell Gardiner (Redford) is a handsome apolitical WASP athlete who is also a burgeoning novelist.
It’s an old-fashioned romance with a depressingly modern ending. Improbably they fall in love and marry, but he sells out his writing talents to Hollywood and she is willing to sacrifice everything – including her husband – for her political convictions.
Streisand captures her liberal, pre-feminist character perfectly.
