Tess (Melanie Griffith) is an ambitious and capable secretary from the wrong side of town – she commutes from Staten Island daily – who can’t get ahead by the rules, so she pretends to be her own boss, while proper boss Katharine (Sigourney Weaver) is laid up sick in hospital. Along the way, she attracts business-wiz Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford).
A captivating romantic comedy fuelled by Melanie’s star-making (and big-haired) performance. Sigourney Weaver is fabulous as callous 80’s businesswoman incarnate.
This is a secretary’s wish-fulfiller that’s an easy-going treat for all in director Mike Nichols’s assured hands. Carly Simon‘s Oscar-winning song, Let the River Run, makes the soundtrack one to treasure, too.
