    Yesterday’s Hero (1979)

Rod Turner (Ian McShane) is a washed-up drunken footballer trying to get his life back on track.

Turner is signed by Third Division team, the Saints – owned by rockstar Clint Simons (Paul Nicholas) who is seeing Turner’s ex-lover, pretty American singer Cloudy (token American Suzanne Somers of Three’s Company fame) – to help them on their FA Cup run to Wembley.

There’s also bitter club manager Jake (Adam Faith) – who hates Turner – and a children’s home run by nuns where Turner mentors and trains the young kids. And (for no reason whatsoever) endless scenes of cheesy disco dancing!

It’s kinda Rocky meets George Best meets Saturday Night Fever meets The Stud – and it was written by Jackie Collins, which probably tells you all you need to know.

It was certainly never going to win any Oscars but it’s an enjoyable film (if you can suffer the inane grin and wooden acting of Paul Nicholas) that uses actual footage of the Nottingham Forest v Southampton 1979 League Cup Final intercut with close up shots of Turner.
