The story of the shock of war that turns a group of boys into men on the battlefields of Europe in 1944. Among them is Private Hacker (Steve Carlson), very much a loner, who little guesses that a few short weeks are to change his life completely.
His first experience of war, under the veteran Sergeant Cooley (The Virginian star James Drury), is a violent skirmish with the enemy which ends with Hacker’s friend falling dead at his feet.
Another group of recruits arrive and, to Cooley’s dismay, they seem even younger than the last. But he has no time to complain. The platoon is ordered out again – to intercept a group of German tanks.
