Cupid’s Inspiration hailed from Stamford, Lincolnshire, originally calling themselves The Ends and paying their dues, like many others, at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany.
The group scored two UK Top 40 hits in 1968. with Yesterday Has Gone (originally a hit for Little Anthony and The Imperials) and My World.
Vocalist Terry Rice-Milton left the band in 1970 and was replaced initially by John Lynch and then by Martin Cure.
Rice-Milton had a solo hit with You’re My World (a previous hit for Cilla Black) in 1970.
By 1978, the band had begun writing and recording heavier rock songs and performing under the name 4 Wheel Drive, which they soon changed to Chevy.
They recruited Steve Walwyn (later of Dr Feelgood) to give a twin guitar sound. Chevy released the singles Too Much Loving, The Taker and Just Another Day, and one album (The Taker), before folding. Bass player Gordon Haskell later joined King Crimson.
Some of the original group reunited for nostalgia shows in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Cupid’s Inspiration reformed in 2010. Wyndham George died on 4 June 2022.
