Dee Dee Sharp

After a stint as a backing vocalist for the Cameo-Parkway labels, Dee Dee Sharp added extra oomph as an uncredited vocalist on Chubby Checker‘s 1962 Slow Twistin’ but got her own name check on novelty dance single Mashed Potato Time in 1962.

For a while she was lumbered with a culinary tag – a subsequent single was Gravy (For My Mashed Potato) – but came back in the Seventies as a vocalist for TSOP and Philadelphia International (her husband Kenny Gamble’s label).

Her subsequent recordings – notably My Best Friend’s Man and I Really Love You – showed an adept and versatile church-reared singer.
