This 1960s girl group formed in Hamtramck, Michigan, and they recorded the song Devil in His Heart for Detroit’s Correc-tone Records in 1961.
In August 1962, the recording was released as the B-side of their sole single Bad Boy on the larger New York label Brent.
The Donays would have disappeared into history as a small footnote based on their one single except the record was somehow discovered and recorded by The Beatles in 1963, retitled Devil in Her Heart.
Bob Dylan famously said on his Theme Time Radio Hour, “The Donays only made one record. You only have to make one if it’s this good”.
Lead singer Yvonne Allen later became the lead vocalist for Motown group The Elgins when they reunited to tour Britain in 1971 following two unexpected UK Top 20 hits.
Yvonne continued singing into the 1990s, working for Ian Levine’s Motor City label.
