Donna Loren was born Donna Zukor in Boston, Massachusetts, on 7 March 1947. She grew up in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Mar Vista, with her mother Ruth, adoptive father Morey Zukor, and two younger brothers, Alan and Rick.
Her first radio commercial (aged 7) for Meadow Gold Ice Cream led to a seven-year contract with Dr Pepper as their spokesperson for television, radio, calendars and personal appearances to promote the drink to a younger demographic.
Following appearances on Shindig! – where she was the featured female vocalist from its debut on 16 September 1964 until late 1965 – she became a regular cast member of the Beach Partymovie franchise from AIP, appearing in Muscle Beach Party, Pajama Partyand the iconic Beach Blanket Bingo, which spawned her signature song It Only Hurts When I Cry.
