Electronic was a perennially-resurgent joint project between Bernard Sumner of New Order and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
Marr’s instinct for infectious, melodic pop guitar and Sumner’s songwriting and programming ability proved to be an effective combination.
Their first single, Getting Away With It (1989) – released on Manchester’s highly-regarded Factory Records – featured the Pet Shop Boys on a breezy, shiny, clever piece of pop.
A patchy but interesting self-titled debut album followed in 1991, and the duo recorded on and off throughout the 90s.
Neither Sumner nor Marr ever went on the record with any formal dissolution of the band despite both having moved onto other projects.
However, in 2003 Marr did agree that the band had reached “its natural conclusion” and was happy with the way it ended on a positive note.
