The group – “Mynci” rhymes with funky, by the way – was formed by Euros Childs, John Lawrence and Richard James whilst still at Bro Myrddin Welsh Comprehensive School in Carmarthen, Wales.
With Sion Lane (keyboards) and Steffan Cravos (violin) added to the lineup, the band recorded the self-released cassette Allumette (1991). Sion and Steffan left shortly afterwards and drummer Osian Evans was recruited for their second cassette Peiriant Pleser (1992).
The group performed in both Welsh and English and had eight Top 75 singles on the UK Singles Chart during their career, presenting a unique and intoxicating hybrid of pop, folk, punk and psychedelia.
Their teen anthem Merched Yn Neud Gwallt Eu Gilydd (“Girls Doing Each Other’s Hair”) somehow located the exact mid-point between Kraftwerk and Chuck Berry, and then threw in a bit of Beach Boys at the end.
The group disbanded in May 2006.
