Formed in the Chicago area in 1981, The Kind recorded their self-titled debut album in 1982 on their own Three-Sixty Records as their single Loved By You was breaking the top 20 spots in Illinois radio on stations like WLS and the band were playing opening spots for superstars like Duran Duran and The Go-Go’s.
1983 saw the release of the Pain and Pleasure album, featuring a tougher sound and image but keeping the same classic power pop pillars of songwriting.
The band called it quits in 1985, after exhausting avenues for the distribution of their music.
Lead singer-songwriter Frank Jalovec died in 1993 from a work-related accident (he was crushed by an escalator he was repairing in Union Station), officially ending the possibility of the group’s future together. He was just 41.
Frank Sberno went on to teach tennis in Palm Springs, California, and Mark Gardner became the owner of the venerable instrument shop Naperville Music outside Chicago.
