Rick D Zehringer started a group called The McCoys in Union City, Indiana, but later changed their name to The Rick Z Combo.

When they were offered the song My Girl Snoopy they agreed to record it if the title was changed to Hang On Sloopy.

The writers agreed to do so if the group changed their name back to The McCoys.

After the recording, Rick decided to simplify his own name also, by changing it to Rick Derringer.

Randy Jo Hobbs died of drug-related heart failure on 5 August 1993 at the age of 45. Bobby Peterson died in Gainesville, Florida on 21 July 1993 at the age of 47.
