Irish folk-rock group Mellow Candle originally came together as three singing teenage girlfriends from a Dublin convent school – Alison Bools, Clodagh Simonds and Mariah White.
Their debut single, Feeling High b/w Tea With The Sun, was recorded while the girls were still at school and released in August 1968 on Simon Napier Bell’s short-lived label, SNB. It flopped and the girls went back to Dublin and “drifted around” for a year.
Mariah White called it a day but Alison and Clodagh continued to write songs and hooked up with local guitarist Dave Williams and bassist Pat Morris, who introduced them to The Incredible String Band, Frank Zappa, Yes, Jethro Tull and Joni Mitchell.
The girls adopted a hippie lifestyle and – with the aid of chemical and herbal supplements – started to create songs of a new kind.
They eventually recorded an album entitled Swaddling Songs on Deram (the progressive arm of Decca records) – which nobody bought upon release but now commands £600+
The group called it a day in 1973 after briefly changing their name to Grace Before Space.
1996 saw the release of The Virgin Prophet, a collection of previously unreleased material by the band, including early versions of many of the songs later released on Swaddling Songs.
