Genesis bass player Mike Rutherford formed Mike & The Mechanics as a side-project, little realising his spin-off group would become a fully-fledged band in their own right.
The band released a number of successful singles, including the epic The Living Years (1989) which Rutherford wrote in response to the death of his father.
Vocal duties were performed by former Ace and Squeeze vocalist Paul Carrack and Paul Young (ex-Sad Café).
Paul Young died of a heart attack on 15 July 2000.
