Formed around the nucleus of Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, The Posies emerged from Seattle in the late 1980s.
Often compared to both The Hollies and Big Star, The Posies were equally adept at classic melodies, sharp harmonies and the kind of clever wordplay that makes Elvis Costello look stiff.
Their 1993 album, Frosting On The Beater, threatened to make them famous until it ran into a big brick wall called grunge.
From 1993 onwards Auer and Stringfellow were also half of Big Star, alongside original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens.
