Regurgitator

Formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1993, Australian band Regurgitator (affectionately known by their fans as “The ‘Gurge”) became famous for their witty, genre-mashing collision of alt-rock, punk, hip-hop, techno, and electro-pop, all wrapped in a thick layer of absurdist humour and anti-corporate satire.

Recorded in Thailand, their debut album Tu-Plang (1996) revitalised the Aussie music scene with raw, heavy tracks like Kong Foo Sing and Sucked Ass.

Their 1997 album, Unit, was recorded in a warehouse and utilised cheap 80s synthesizers and hyper-catchy hooks. The album swept the 1998 ARIA Awards, winning five categories including Album of the Year. Third album …Art (1999) continued their streak of clever pop music subversion.

Standout singles included the falsetto-driven electro-pop Prince parody ! (The Song Formerly Known As), Polyester Girl, Black Bugs, and Everyday Formula.

Regurgitator also achieved notoriety for their creative stunts. In 2004, they participated in the “Band in a Bubble” project. Sponsored by Channel [V], the band locked themselves inside a transparent, glass-walled recording studio in Melbourne’s Federation Square for three weeks to record their album Mish Mash!, living and working completely in the public eye.

In April 2024, they released their highly acclaimed 11th studio album, Invader, featuring collaborations with Canadian electro-clash icon Peaches and Indigenous Australian rapper JK-47.
