Shriekback was formed in 1981 by former XTC keyboardist Barry Andrews and ex-Gang Of Four bassist Dave Allen.
Joined by guitarist Carl Marsh they fused funk and rock with a unique and complex rhythmic approach that belonged to that early 80s school of indie (classmates: Cabaret Voltaire, Gang Of Four) who considered playing austere, twitchy funk to be a subversive act.
Between 1981 and 1988 they released six albums of chopped, experimental art-funk with a vaguely political hue, then split before re-forming to tour the US in 1992. Unfortunately, the constant frantic quirkiness eventually became irksome.
