The Music Shop made its debut on 24 September 1955 – the very first Saturday of Independent Television’s broadcast history. Airing at 3:00 pm each Saturday, the show marked one of ATV’s earliest entries into music programming.
Over time, the programme appeared under a few different names, beginning as ABC Music Shop before later rebranding as ATV Music Shop. At the centre of the show was Canadian-born broadcaster Gerry Wilmot, who took on the role of the ‘Shop Keeper’, acting as host and guide through each week’s musical offerings.
The guest list featured a mix of established television regulars, including Lita Roza, Anne Shelton, Bert Weedon, and Joe Loss. But the programme also gave exposure to fresh talent uncovered by producer Dicky Leeman.
Among these were the close harmony duo The Tanner Sisters and pianist Bill McGuffie, notable for playing with just nine fingers.
Musical accompaniment throughout the series was provided by a group led by Tommy Maxwell and Ted Brennan. The format also included light entertainment features, such as competitions – one of the most popular being a mystery voice contest that engaged viewers at home.
The Music Shop ran for a year, concluding its initial run in October 1956. However, the concept was revived in 1958 with singer Teddy Johnson taking over hosting duties.
This second version remained on air until February 1960.
