Aired on 15 July 1978, this was the unsuccessful ABC television pilot based on the critically-acclaimed BBC series Rock Follies telling the story of three talented and ambitious girls – Jess (Ellen Greene), Lil (Louisa Flaningam) and Catherine (Susan Bigelow) – and their quest for fame and fortune in the rock music world.
The girls are thrown together when they audition for, and win, jobs as Las Vegas showgirls. But the gig turns out to be a fourth-rate revue as foils for a fifth-rate comic (Robert Alda).
Disheartened, the ladies band together as a rock vocal group called The Rock Rainbow at the suggestion of their friend and accomplice, Speed (John Shea).
Back home in California, they have to overcome the scoffing objections of the men in their lives to put together a top-notch musical act. Their next problem is how to go from a joint bankroll that would barely buy three seats on a bus to raising the $8,000 they need for a showcase to get The Rock Rainbow’s act off the ground.
Unfortunately, The Rock Rainbow made it only as far as its first hour-long episode and the plot made it no further than the struggling-for-success stage. ABC chose to go instead with the very similar series Sugar Time!, which itself was eventually cancelled prematurely.
Ellen Greene later starred as ditzy blonde Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors(1986) alongside Rick Moranis and Steve Martin (a part she had played in the original stage production).
