Shiver and Shake

This short-lived weekly comic from IPC was published from 1973 to 1974.

It borrowed the central gimmick of Whizzer and Chips, dividing itself into two mini-comics: one headed by a cartoon ghost named Shiver, the other by an overweight elephant in a school uniform named Shake.

The Shiver section featured strips featuring ghosts and other beasties, while the Shake section presented more standard comic fare, featuring bullies, pranksters etc.

Shiver and Shake lasted for just eighty-three issues before merging into Whoopee!

• Creepy Creations – Full page posters of creatures such as The One-Eyed Wonk of Wigan (a hairy, unicorn-horned, one-eyed, elephant-nosed beast) and The Crab-Nosed Clodhopper from Cleethorpes (an anthropomorphic clog complete with four legs, a head and a crab nose – natch).
• The Duke’s Spook – which starred Shiver himself, who enjoyed a friendly relationship with the titular Duke but a frostier relationship with the butler, Grimes
• Frankie Stein – from Wham!
• The Fixer
• Gal Capone
• Ghouldilocks
• Grimly Feendish – “The rottenest crook in the world”. An Uncle Fester lookalike who was accompanied by an assortment of little monsters known as his Squelchies. Originally seen in Wham! and Smash! comics in the 1960s.

• Lolly Pop
• Match of the Week
• Scream Inn – a hotel run by ghosts and monsters that offered £1 million to anyone who could spend a night there. Characters included Bertie Bedsheet, Boneypart (a skeleton), Dennis the Devil (a demonic imp) and Suffering Sam (an Elizabethan chap with a ruff around his neck and an axe embedded in the top of his head!)

• Webster – a cute little cartoon spider who would inevitably spin his web in a dangerous or inappropriate spot.
