This sister comic to Eagle was a polished weekly colour production for girls which first appeared in 1951.
The original front cover comic strip was ‘Kitty Hawke and her All-Girl Air Crew’, about a group of women running a charter airline. The strip did not prove popular and was deemed to be too masculine and relegated to the black and white interior pages. It was replaced on the cover by the schoolgirl strip ‘Wendy and Jinx’.
Regular strips included:
- Angela Air Hostess
- At Work With Janet, Fashion Artist
- Belle of the Ballet
- Captain Starling
- Claudia of the Circus
- Emergency Ward 10 – based on the TV series
- Flying Cloud – a western strip

As times changed, Girl tried to stay relevant, adding strips such as ’21 Newlands Park’ – a story about a family living at that address in a New Town – which included a storyline about a group of teddy boys invading a youth club.
The hoodlums came from “a new skyscraper block of flats at the corner of our road. In three weeks they had already got a dreadful reputation for themselves in the new town with their hooliganism. Only the previous day they had let down Dad’s car tyres”.
The final issue of Girl was dated 3 October 1964, after which it was merged into Princess.
Another (unrelated) comic called Girl was published by IPC from 1981 to 1990.
