Kenner launched Smash-Up Derby in 1970 under their “SSP” (Super Sonic Power) line.
The set contained two plastic cars with body parts that clipped into place (wheels, bumpers, doors etc) and which were powered by a gyro wheel with a rip-cord. The most common set included a blue ’57 Chevy Nomad and a red ’57 Ford. Another popular set contained a VW Bug and a pick-up.
When the two cars met, parts would go flying.
The set also contained two ramps for some truly spectacular mid-air collisions.
Kenner upgraded the cars by the mid-70s and added chrome (called “Ultra Chrome”). The bug and pickup were later reissued as “Crazy Crashers”.
