My Wife Next Door

1 9 7 2 – 1 9 7 3 (UK)
13 x 30 minute episodes

When George and Suzy Bassett (John Alderton and the gorgeous Hannah Gordon) get divorced they both move into new cottages in a small village.

Coincidentally – and unfortunately – it is the same small village near Stoke Poges.

So the pair inadvertently become next-door neighbours, with George moving into number 1 Copse Cottages and Suzy purchasing the property at number 2 Copse Cottages.

The couple despise the fact that they are living next to each other, despite it being clear to the audience that they are still in love with each other.

Episodes revolve around classic farce scenarios, with birthdays and anniversaries being forgotten, potential suitors having to be secreted about the premises, mothers-in-law having to be mollified and rich uncles having to be convinced over supper that the union is still intact

George makes numerous attempts to win back his wife, but events repeatedly conspire against him, and at the end of the series, the situation remains unresolved.

My Wife Next Door was the Society For Television Arts (SFTA) award-winner for 1972 and two unsuccessful attempts were made to adapt the series for US television.

The first starred James Farentino and Julie Somers in 1975 and the second starred Granville Van Dusen and Lee Purcell and aired on 11 September 1980.
