David Cassidy – Man Undercover was an unlikely spin-off from Police Story featuring the ex-Partridge Family singer as LA police officer Dan Shay – a kind of one-man Mod Squad.

Pre-empting 21 Jump Street by several years, the show emphasised the youth element and had David infiltrating a gang of young bank robbers, posing as a college student, and pretending to be a drug addict.

The short series co-starred Wendy Rastatter as Cassidy’s wife, Joanne; Elizabeth Reddin as their young daughter, Cindy; and Simon Oakland as Cassidy’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Abrams.

One critic likened the theme song (as performed by David, who also wrote it) as a “cross between Feelings and the mating cry of a Siberian newt.”
